Be aware of the latest phone scams

Scammers are creative and dangerous. We are all aware that they prey on the unsuspecting. However, we can become complacent in our belief that we are knowledgeable about their activities and can thwart any attempt they make to deceive us. The truth is that no one is immune to a scam. The latest round of possible scam activity shows just how devious scammers can be. According to AARP, the newest round of scams could affect you. If you are friendly, thrifty, or even financially sophisticated, scammers are looking for you. You are a potential victim.
One of the latest scams involves tech support. An unsolicited phone call tells you that your computer is infected by viruses that their office has detected. The caller may state that he/she is affiliated with a reputable company that you know and trust (which is not true). You are told to call a number and follow instructions to remove the viruses. If you follow the directions, your computer will have malware installed on it and the scammer can steal your username and password, hold your data for ransom, or use the webcam to spy on you.
Another potential scam situation requires nothing more from you than just answering the phone. The phone rings and as soon as you answer it, your number is added to a list of potential victims. You have now been placed on a target list. Having caller ID and refusing to answer any call that is not recognized is the only way to protect yourself from being put on the list.
Be careful of charities that solicit door to door or charities that request your credit card number over the phone. Investigate the charity thoroughly before donating. Donating to local charities that are in your area may offer more security than sending your money elsewhere in the country. It is easier to check out local charities through the Better Business Bureau to ensure that your money is going to a good cause.
Also be wary of faith-based dating sites. Typically, the scammer will form a bond with the victim and then use various ploys to steal money. The scam works because people find it hard to distrust someone of their own faith. Legitimate relationships are built on common values and interests. It will not be based on anyone’s ability to bail someone out of a bind. If asked for money, even if it is only a hint, then the details should be investigated. Love is not based on monetary value.
The ways that people are scammed are as numerous as the events in people’s lives. The federal website www.usa.gov/scamsandfrauds repeatedly states that money should never be sent to any entity that the consumer does not know. It is always better to err on the side of caution and hang up on any suspicious call. And any attempt at a scam should be reported to your state’s consumer protection office. It is important to protect yourself.
