BEPZA to set up economic zone in Mirsarai

Bangladesh EPZ Authority is going to set up economic zone on 1150 acres of land at Mirsarai upazila in Chittagong, a press statement said yesterday.

Prime Minister and also the chairman of BEPZA governor board Sheikh Hasina has recently given approval for setting up ‘BEPZA Economic Zone’.
The activities of the economic zone will start very soon by formally signing the Memorandum of Understan-ding (MoU) between Bangladesh Export Process-ing Zones Authority (BEPZA) and Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA).
Presently, investors from 38 countries have invested US$ 4,138.87 million in the eight EPZs of BEPZA. Despite of having demand, it was not possible to allot land to the local and foreign investors for the last few years due to scarcity of land in the EPZs located at Dhaka and Chittagong regions.
It would be possible to allocate land to the potential investors of BEPZA whether the BEPZA Economic Zone starts at Mirsarai nearby Chittagong. Moreover, proven expertise of BEPZA in setting up EPZ, operational experience and professional knowledge will accelerate the activities of development of the BEPZA Economic Zone.
In the last fiscal year, the EPZs gained $ 404.36 million investment and exported goods worth $ 6676.32 million. BEPZA has been contributing around 20 per cent of FDI and total national export for the last consecutive years.
Presently around 4,63,000 Bangladeshi nationals are working in the 462 operational enterprises of EPZs, among them 64 per cent are female, the statement added.
