Dhaka stocks end mixed amid choppy trading

The country’s prime bourse Dhaka Stock Exchange inched up yesterday amid volatile trading as investors were mostly followed cautious stance ahead of Eid-ul Azha holidays.

DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), settled at 5,172, gaining 3.12 points or 0.06 per cent over the previous session.

A leading broker said some retail investors were selling shares to pull out money ahead of Eid festival as only four trading days are left before nine-day Eid vacations.

Trading and official activities on the bourses will remain closed for nine days from August 9 to August 17, including weekly holidays, on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, the second largest religious festival of the Muslims.

The DSES (Shariah index) also gained 1.75 points to settle at 1,193. But the DS30 index, comprising blue chips, fell 1.71 points to finish at 1,836.

The turnover, another important indicator of the market, stood at Tk 4.63 billion, which was 3.74 per cent lower than the previous day’s turnover of Tk 4.81 billion.

EBL Securities said the market ended slightly higher as investor reacted cautiously prior to the Eid-ul-Azha holidays.

The stockbroker noted that the core index witnessed volatile trading throughout the session but buying pressure outweighed the selling pressure which triggered the bourse to settle in green.

The major sectors showed mixed performance. Textile sector posted the highest gain of 1.7 per cent, followed by pharma with 0.6 per cent, engineering 0.5 per cent and power 0.3 per cent.

On the other hand, non-bank financial institutions saw the highest loss of 0.6 per cent, followed by food with 0.4 per cent and banking 0.3 per cent.

The port city bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange, however, finished slightly lower with the CSE All Share Price Index – CASPI – losing 5.29 points to settle at 15,793 while the Selective Categories Index – CSCX –shedding 4.42 points to finish at 9,599.

The gainers beat the losers as 126 issues ended higher, 112 closed lower and 21 remained unchanged.
