Duplex Goes From Scary For Some To Useful For All With Call Screen On The Pixel 3

Google’s introduction of Duplex at last Spring’s I/O conference was the headline story of the event. As a reminder, Duplex is an intelligent assistant designed to carry out phone conversations that combines extraordinary skill at mimicking natural human speech patterns with the ability to adapt to changes in the conversation. When the Assistant with Duplex onboard called a restaurant to reserve a table for dinner, the ensuing conversation was so natural the person who took the call was unaware they were talking to an AI program.

Duplex is a breathtaking display of Google’s grasp of natural language processing and artificial intelligence. It mimics human speech so successfully that it freaked some people out and a flood of “duplex is scary” articles appeared on technology websites in the days following its introduction (google “duplex scary” for examples). Google didn’t abandon Duplex because some found it frightening, however. Instead, it found a way to make the technology more useful.

Everyone with a phone has received a call they didn’t want to take for one reason or another. Google’s new Pixel 3 phone uses Duplex-like technology to solve this problem. The Assistant answers the call, the conversation is transcribed to the screen, and the user taps an option that tells the Assistant how to handle the call. Google calls it Call Screen.

Here’s how it works. When you invoke Call Screen the Assistant answers the call and asks the caller who they are and what they want. The interaction is printed on your screen in real time and you decide what to do next. Google lists the following options along with the messages that are conveyed to the caller.
