EU travel ban on 15 nations goes

The European Council on Tuesday advised its member states to lift travel restrictions in force on 15 countries as the external borders of the Schengen region was set to open from July 1.

Residents of 15 countries - Algeria, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia and Uruguay - are anticipated to be allowed usage of the Schengen area from Wednesday, according to Bangladesh diplomats in Brussels. 

China would also get the conveniences subject to the state confirmation of reciprocity.

The residents of Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican may also access the Schengen region as they are considered EU residents, in line with the Brussels Times.

This list will be reviewed and could be updated every fourteen days, the European Council said on Tuesday.

The EU authorities were focusing on a set of 54 countries for assessing potentials of granting usage of the region based on several requirements and conditions, like the COVID-19 situation and containment measures of these countries.

Bangladesh and america were not considered qualified to receive initial assessments because of deteriorating COVID-19 situation.

In particular, a country should posses an interest rate of innovative cases of COVID-19 near to or below 16 per 100,000 inhabitants (average in the EU) during the last 14 days.
