Export earnings go up by 26 pc
Country's exports surged by 26.54 per cent to $3.21 billion in the first month of current fiscal 2017-18. Ready-made garments led the surge.
According to the statistics of Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), Bangladesh earned $3.21 billion, which is 26.54% higher compared to $2.53 in the same period last year. However, the figure is nearly 1% less than the target of $3.24 billion set for the month.
Country's income from ready-made garment items, including knitwear and woven, stood at about $2.48 billion in last month of previous fiscal. Comparing with the same period of last fiscal year knitwear garment export grew by 17.28 per cent to $1.26 billion while woven garments increased 16.88 per cent to $1.22 billion, EPB data showed.
The EPB data showed that Bangladesh's export income in 2016-17 fiscal year grew by 1.69 per cent year-on-year reaching $34.66 billion. It fell short of the projected target by 5.85 per cent. According to EPB, Bangladesh set its export target in 2017-18 fiscal year at $37.50 billion, including $30.16 billion from ready-made garment products.
