With a view to inspiring Bangladeshi law students and early-career professionals in the United Kingdom, the FutureLaw Initiative hosted a career development session titled as ‘the FutureLaw Conclave 2019’ in London on November 19, 2019. Bangladeshi law students from 12 universities across the UK, including Queen Mary, City, Cardiff, BPP, Middlesex, and Greenwich as well as a few early-career professionals participated in the conclave.
In the conclave hosted by Mr. Shyikh Mahdi, founder of the FutureLaw Initiative, several successful young law professionals of Bangladeshi origin spoke as panel speakers, including Mr. Irfan Ahmed (Solicitor, Kirkland and Ellis LLP), Mr Nazmus Sakib Tareque (CEO of Legume Express), Ms. Manjida Ahmed (Ph.D. Candidate at Middlesex University) and Ms. Anisha Qaiyum (Solicitor, Juno Legal). The speakers highlighted the ups and downs of their journey in the UK legal scene as Bangladeshi immigrants, and shared valuable insights from individual experiences for the participants.
The highlight of the event was the presence of Mr. Mozammel Hossain QC as the Guest of Honour. Being the 4th, and youngest Queen’s Counsel of Bangladeshi origin, Mr. Hossain is a criminal barrister practicing from the chambers at 187 Fleet Street. Mr. Hossain highlighted the importance of passion, self-confidence, and hard work as the secret behind any success for law professionals.
The FutureLaw Initiative is an R&D platform striving to contribute to the positive transformation of the legal industry in Bangladesh through innovation and capacity-building of the stakeholders (i.e. professionals). The FutureLaw Conclave was the first international event of the platform to build an impactful bridge between the Bangladeshi law students and the UK diaspora. The event was held at the Prince’s Room of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple in London.
