Global Food Ingredients Ltd. (GFI) detailed on June 29 that its new pea-splitting facility has finished construction. The state-of-the-art facility is part of the company’s plant-based ingredient complex in Zealandia, Saskatchewan.

The new facility has a processing capacity of more than 60,000 tonnes of yellow and green split peas and pea fiber annually. GFI’s facility uses advanced steam technology to reduce water usage and environmental impact when processing pea ingredients. Byproducts from the facility will be used to support the company’s Plant-Based Pet Food Ingredients segment, decreasing potential waste. GFI’s pet food ingredients include ground peas, lentils and beans, as well as green and red lentils, chickpeas, beans and canary seed. The company’s pet food ingredients are made in its production facility in Bowden, Alberta.

"Our new pea splitting facility is a cornerstone to GFI's plant-based ingredients strategy, using leading edge technology to provide top quality split peas to food markets, while also providing inputs for our pet food ingredients business, connecting our business lines and maximizing margins while eliminating waste," said David Hanna, chief executive officer of GFI.

To launch and market its pea ingredients, GFI will sell its split-peas under the GFI North Lily brand, which offers premium and ultra-premium quality ingredients.
