Google delays return to office and programs flexible work week

Google extended the go back of its personnel to offices until September 2021, joining an increasing number of companies throughout various industries that are actually extending flexible work choices as a result of Covid-19 pandemic.

Alphabet-owned Google was one of the first companies to change to remote employed in March as the pandemic spread all over the world. It's the third period, it has delayed plans for employees to return to its offices. A Dubai-centered spokeswoman for the business confirmed the latest decision to The National on Tuesday.

In May, the company said it could reopen the majority of its global offices on July 6 but that was pushed to January 2021 because of a surge in the number of cases and subsequently to June 30 next year before the latest decision.

Google can be considering implementing a good “flexible do the job week” once it really is safe for staff members to return to any office, allowing personnel to work at least 3 days a week in the office for “collaboration times”, the company’s spokeswoman added.

The company's chief executive Sundar Pichai informed employees by email of the possible new working environment.

“We are assessment a hypothesis a flexible function model will bring about greater productivity, collaboration and well-appearing,” Mr Pichai said.

“No enterprise at our level has ever created a completely hybrid workforce model, though a few are needs to test it … so it will be interesting to try,” he added.

Second and third waves of Covid-19 have forced various countries to implement further lockdowns.

Google happens to be investing heavily in expanding its offices found in San Jose, NY and in the company’s sprawling headquarters found in Mountain View, California.

An interior survey in September, confirmed a majority of Google employees do not want to come back to any office full-time.

A lot more than six in 10 employees stated they would like to return to any office at some level but not every day. Only 8 % of Google’s personnel said they want to come to any office each day, while 10 per cent want to work from home permanently.

“We value our offices, we value the way of life … but we do feel that we need to create more overall flexibility and even more hybrid models,” Mr Pichai said.

Global technology companies are thinking about a staggered return to work in order to resume office businesses safely.

Facebook and Twitter have previously given their employees a choice to work from home permanently. Microsoft can be allowing a few of its staff to work from home permanently.

Apple, however, is getting staff back again to its shops in different phases after it turn off its retail functions amid the outbreak.
