Illegal brick kilns damage standing crop in Noakhali

Brick kilns that have been established at Senbagh and Jamidar haat areas in Noakhali in violation of the government’s rules and laws are badly polluting several residential areas as well as agricultural fields. As a result, the standing paddy crop has been badly affected.

Sources said a total of 20 brick kilns, including ‘jikjak’ kilns and Bengal kilns, have been set up under Senbagh upazila. Residents of the bazaar area and several villages have directly experienced the pollution caused by smoke coming out of the brick kilns there. The owners of the brick kilns have blatantly flouted the rules when setting up the kilns, they alleged. Many farmers are worried about their tender paddy plants.

Again, the owners of the brickfields use children to carry bricks into the kilns.

In 1992 and 2000, the land ministry issued a circular stating that brick kilns must not be set up within a 3-km area of residential houses, educational institutes, orchards, gardens and paddy fields. However, the brick kilns in Senbagh have been set up near houses and paddy fields.

Yet, the owners of many brick kilns are not following the rules at all. Environmentalists have protested against the illegal brick kilns that are being run under the noses of the local administration.

Again, many of these brick kilns were established without chimneys of a proper height. In 2009, the government had ordered that only those brick kilns be set up that are 120 to 130 feet in height. But chimneys only 50 to 70 feet high have been set up here. At night, huge quantities of wood are used to burn bricks, flouting the government’s rules. As a result, valuable timbers are being destroyed in the brick kilns.

These brick kilns are severely polluting the environment by emitting black smoke. Also, they are destroying the fertility of the arable lands.

Widespread demands have been raised for stringent measures to be taken immediately in this respect.
