Kadapakkam Lake in Chennai will soon turn into an eco park

In the coming days, the famous Kadapakkam lake in Chennai will be transformed into an eco park by the Greater Chennai Corporation. When done, the lake that spreads across 149 acres, will become Chennai’s biggest eco park. The park will be loaded with amenities such as a fishing area, cycling lane, walking space, skating area, bird island and kid’s play area, among others.
This is a part of the corporation’s INR 149 crore package for lake restoration to help increase the water holding capacity of the lake from 1.1 million to 2.2 million cubic metres. This will also deepen the lake by two metres.
The lake is heavily polluted right now. It’s not fenced and people easily get inside and dump their garbage. But the authorities are hoping that everything will change once the eco park takes shape. As of now, the civic body has also prepared an environmental report for the restoration of the lake. The restoration work is being done as part of the Kosasthalaiyar basin flood mitigation project.Balasubramaniam, superintendent engineer of stormwater drains department, informed, “There are already a lot of amenities for south and central Chennai but not so much for north Chennai. This will help people get access to good quality leisure space”.
In a bid to boost tourism in the region, the authorities are planning to build a huge parking area as well in the hope of generating some revenue from parking.
