Strong global commitment and effort are needed to help Bangladesh and other countries, who are most vulnerable to climate change, to create transition to green economy and invest more decarbonization of production methods and consumption.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the South Asian Regional Centre of Global Centre on Adaptation (GCA) in Dhaka on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen also said that since the reason behind climate change is global, the answer to the problem must also result from the world.

"GCA Dhaka will be a milestone for international partnership as following the devastation of the Covid-19 pandemic, we will build back our climate resilience far better by making transition to a green economy and buying more decarbonization of the production methods and consumption," he said.

"But this requires a solid global commitment and effort," he added in the presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and GCA chair and former US secretary-general Ban Ki-moon.

Dr Momen said: "Reason behind climate change is global so naturally the answer takes a global initiative. Today’s inauguration of the GCA South Asia Regional Office in Dhaka is an important part of that collective initiative."

However, the origin of the occasion goes back to the “Dhaka Meeting of the Global Commission on Adaptation (GCA),” organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in July 2019, where in fact the prime minister invited the GCA chair Ban Ki-moon to determine the regional office for South Asia in Dhaka, he said.

"The whole planet reaches risk, but based on the Global Climate Risk Index, particularly South Asia may be the most vulnerable region connected with climate change related risks and threats," Dr Momen said.

"Together with the countries of the region, GCA Bangladesh office will promote locally developed nature-based sustainable solutions and ground breaking adaptation measures. We will generate a Centre of Excellence not only for the regional countries, also for the other regions of the world by sharing our guidelines," he said.

Bangladesh is preparing to share her experience and best practices regarding adaptation and disaster management, he stated.

“We desire to receive necessary support from the international development partners inside our efforts as it is very simple to achieve and demonstrate climate resilience successes in this area,” said the minister.
