You can expect to see more people on the roads, rails and in the air, compared to last year.

AAA released their Memorial Day weekend travel prediction information, and it shows a 3.6% increase in travelers in 2019, compared to 2018.

AAA expects 43 million Americans to travel for the Memorial Day weekend, which begins Thursday, May 23rd, and ends Monday, May 27th.

AAA says an analytics company shows drive times in some major U.S. cities could increase 2-3 times longer on Thursday and Friday of that weekend, than normal travel times.

“Drivers in the most congested metros should expect much worse conditions than normal,” said Trevor Reed, transportation analyst, INRIX. “Travelers should anticipate delays to start on Wednesday and continue through Memorial Day. Our advice to drivers is to avoid the morning and evening commuting times or plan alternate routes.”

The Alabama average price is currently $2.48 per gallon, compared to $2.61 per gallon this time last year.

“When gas prices are expensive, travelers may shorten the distance of a road trip, eat out less or look for free activities,” said Clay Ingram, AAA Alabama spokesperson. “But, overall, prices are very similar to this time last year and, like then, they aren’t letting that deter them from taking summer road trips.”
