Robi today deposited Tk 27.60 crore as the first, out of five, installments against the telecom regulatory commission’s claimed audit findings.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission Chairman Md Jahirul Haque confirmed it to The Daily Star.

Following a High Court order, the second largest mobile carrier has paid their first installment to pave the way for the operator to avoid a raft of restrictions and thus rejuvenate business growth.

On January 5, the High Court made this order to pay Tk 138 crore in five installments against the BTRC’s claim of Tk 867.23 crore and pay the first installment by January 31.

Following an audit in 2016, the commission claimed the money from Robi accumulated for unpaid revenue share, taxes and late fees since its inception in 1997 to December 2014.

From the beginning, Robi called the claim “unfounded”, saying the commission did not follow the audit rules properly.

On November 24, the Supreme Court asked Grameenphone to pay Tk 2,000 crore out of the Tk 12,579 crore claimed by the commission. However, they the top player yet to make their decision to pay the sum.
