Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Rubana Huq has assured personnel they'll not lose their jobs for staying home through the Covid-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

The business enterprise leader delivered the assurance through an audio tracks message to the media on Saturday, following widespread criticism of apparel personnel rushing back again to Dhaka to rejoin at the job.

 “If an employee is absent from work, they won't lose their jobs in consideration of the problem. I earnestly request that owners understand this from the view point of humanity. I believe owners in the sector which contributes too much to the economy, won't take away jobs as a result of their absence,” Rubana Huq said.

The BGMEA president also guaranteed that staff will be paid wages for the month of March.

“There is absolutely no scope for unwillingness or hesitation in paying apparel workers, wages for the month of March, and we of course can pay it with time,” she added.

A huge number of garment workers have already been returning to the administrative centre recently, because of news of garment factories being set to open today.

People were returning on foot or using local transpors, as a result of shutdown of inter-district bus and train movement on Friday, police said.

According to workers, garment factories are set to open again from Sunday.

The personnel also said they fear losing their jobs if indeed they fail to are accountable to their workstations, so they are time for Dhaka even while they face the chance of coronavirus infection.

The factories were closed from March 25 until April 4. However, BGMEA sources said about 90 factories are to suspend businesses under section 12 of the Bangladesh Labour Act. Workers would be eligible for their wages, as per section 16(1) of the act.
