Samsung India showcased their Cinema LED Onyx on August 28 at the Big Cine Expo in Mumbai, India. The Onyx LED screens, which is already in implementation in various cities in the country like Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai revamps the age-old movie-watching experience in theaters. The screen ditches the use of projectors that has been prom9inent in the Indian Cinema Industry for over a 100 years.

The Onyx screen displays true black color, HDR support and is unaffected by Ambient light. So you don’t need to switch off the lights to get a complete cinematic experience. The screen is also power efficient and gives excellent 3D depth. This is coupled with Samsung’s Onyx Sound systems powered by JBL by Harman International and Samsung’s Audio Lab, which offers clear, crisp sound.

"We use active 3D and the brighter screen means you lose only 15 per cent brightness while watching 3D video, compared to the conventional passive 3D, where there is a 50-60 per cent loss in brightness," said Mr Puneet Sethi, Vice President, Consumer Electronics Enterprise Business, Samsung India.

The Onyx experience comes together through Onyx View and Onyx Sound.

Onyx View
Onyx View, combined with an infinite contrast ratio and specialized low-tone greyscale settings delivers brighter and more detail-rich content. The screen delivers High Dynamic Range (HDR) to the cinema, showcasing on-screen contents at peak brightness level - nearly 10 times greater than that offered by standard cinema projectors (146fL versus 14fL). The display delivers improved uniformity, free of optical distortion and interference. It is the industry’s first DCI-certified cinema display available in variations extending between 5m, 10m & 14m in width.

The display easily accommodates any venue configuration while delivering fantastic visual quality, technical performance and reliability over traditional projectors. The screen maintains its advanced presentation capabilities in ambient lighting conditions, regardless of the featured on-screen content. It also accommodates users who wish to utilize their theatres for corporate events, concert and sports event viewing, and gaming competitions.

The 3D Onyx Cinema LED screen makes 3D movie content more realistic through enhanced brightness and consistent colour amplification. Glass-wearing viewers can now have the benefit of watching subtitle texts, images and even minor visual details with unprecedented clarity, sans the dark, blurry shadowing and potential dizziness that can occur in traditional 3D movie theatres.

Onyx Sound
The screen also offers state-of-the-art Onyx surround sound experience from JBL by Harman International and Samsung’s Audio Lab, bringing scenes to life through’ clear and precise audio. This integration eliminates rearward bias by expanding the audio ‘sweet spot’, while ensuring that all attendees can enjoy the same experience regardless of seat location, within the theatre.
