Some Users Experiencing System Crashes on macOS 10.15.4, Especially During Large Data file Transfers
Collected
The crashing issue is apparently most prominent when users try to make large file transfers. In a forum content, SoftRAID described the problem as a bug and explained that it is dealing with Apple engineers on a repair for macOS 10.15.5, or a workaround.
SoftRAID said the problem reaches Apple-formatted disks:
There is a serious issue with 10.15.4.
It displays up in different scenarios, even in Apple disks but is much more likely when there are plenty of IO threads. We believe this is a threading concern. So while SoftRAID volumes happen to be hit the hardest (its now hard to duplicate more than 30GB of data at a time), all devices are influenced by this.
In our bug are accountable to Apple, we used a strategy to reproduce the condition with ONLY Apple formatted disks. Takes much longer to replicate, but that is much more likely to get a more rapidly fix to an individual base.
Other users about macOS 10.15.4 have experienced crashes after waking their Macintosh from sleep, with damaged systems suffering a good kernel panic and rebooting to the Apple emblem, according to responses shared on the Apple Support Communities, MacRumors Discussion boards, Reddit, and Twitter.
After updating to macOS 10.15.4, users could also encounter continuous spinning up and spinning down of linked hard drives when a Mac is meant to be asleep, which could result in harm to the drive, according to Jeremy Horwitz.
We've reached out to Apple for comment and we'll provide an update if we hear again.
