Tesla’s New Autopilot Chip Will Be Ready In Six Months
Tesla’s Autopilot semi-autonomous driving aid requires sophisticated hardware and the company continues to improve the underlying technology to make it more capable. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed that a new chip for Autopilot will be ready in six months and will be present in all of its new production cars.
Musk confirmed on Twitter that it will be six months before this new chip is present in the production cars that roll off the line. No changes have been made to the sensors that power this system. Musk clarified that this is a replacement of the Autopilot computer. He claimed that the new chip will improve Autopilot’s performance between 500 and 2000 percent.
The new production cars will have it from the factory and customers who ordered full self-driving when purchasing their Tesla will be able to get it replaced free of charge. Customers who did not order full self-driving when purchasing their Tesla will have to pay $5,000 for the installation of this new chip.
Further details about the improvements made by this chip will be revealed in due course most likely. That will possibly happen when the company is close to getting cars off the production line with this new Autopilot chip.
