The enterprising fashion designer is smashing cup runways at Turtleson apparel

As a little girl, Jalina Colón’s grandmother taught her how exactly to hand sew. The first item she remembers producing was a pillowcase dress on her behalf stuffed animal, Henrietta the Pig.
“I made my own little type of dresses for all my toys,” Colón says with a smile. “My grandmother even provided me trimmings, so I could put lace to underneath of the dresses."
During difficult financial times, pillowcase dresses were a simple and economical option for clothing. These were created from old linens, potato sacks not to mention pillowcases. As the kid grows, the dress often turns into a high and is placed together at the shoulders with ribbons or string.
As Colón describes making the clothes, her face lights up.
"My Henrietta Pig was very stylish,” she says with a giggle.
Her parents, Pam and Jesus Colón, remember Henrietta - and her fashionable clothes. “Jalina’s been creative,” says Jesus.
Now, three decades later, the promise Colón demonstrated with pillowcase dresses offers been recognized by a significant player in the style industry.
Colón is shattering glass runways as the first technical and only female designer for Turtleson apparel, which she joined to assume the role in January of last year. Turtleson recently transferred its procedures to Bristol, Tennessee, where Colón, a native of Augusta, Georgia, offers relocated.
