Palm on Tuesday started taking pre-orders for an unlocked version of the 3.3-inch phone. Priced at $349, the unlocked version works with AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and MetroPCS. It's only available in the US, though, and comes in titanium and gold.

"With so many cellular options available in the US, we wanted our customers to be able to choose how they use and how they connect their Palm," Palm Cofounder Dennis Miloseski said in a statement. "We received a huge response from digital minimalists looking to just carry their essentials, families wanting to connect kids with less distraction, and athletes desiring powerful connectivity on the go, so we made Palm available to them across more mobile networks in the U.S."

For a limited time, those who pre-order the standalone unlocked Palm will receive a free leather case with neck and wrist lanyards valued at $30.

The Palm Phone earned a "fair" rating in PCMag's review. We called it "beautifully tiny" but lamented its "poor Wi-Fi, LTE, and call quality."

It was originally designed to be used as a companion device, meaning it would share a number with your main smartphone. The idea was that you'd bring the Palm phone along when you didn't feel like carrying around your big phone. Palm in April started offering the phone as a standalone device, giving users the option of ditching their big smartphone and getting a phone number and data plan just for Palm phone.

Until now, it has been a Verizon exclusive in the US. With the addition of this unlocked version, you can now use it on all major US carriers, with the exception of Sprint.

"The vision for Palm was always to provide a game-changing, high-quality product at an affordable price that puts the customer back in charge of their digital lives," Palm Cofounder Howard Nuk said in a statement. "Compact but powerful, Palm allows customers to focus on what really matters in life outside our screens."
