Commerce minister Tipu Munshi on Tuesday laid focus on the signing of a preferential trade agreement between Bangladesh and Nepal to improve trade and investment between the two countries.

‘Nepal is a good friend of Bangladesh. There exists a possibility of increasing trade between your two countries. It is possible to increase trade through a PTA signing. Road links between Bangladesh and Nepal has been opened. Railway links will also be launched,’ he said.

The minister said these whenever a Nepalese delegation led by industry, commerce and supplies affairs secretary Baikuntha Aryal called on him at the ministry in the capital, said a news release.

Tipu said that the Bangladesh-Nepal Trade and Economic Cooperation Meeting has been held in Dhaka and there would be a detailed discussion on the signing of this agreement at the meeting.

‘If both countries agree, Bangladesh PTA will be signed with Nepal soon,’ he added.

He said that Bangladesh would graduate out of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) status in 2024 and the united states would not get the LDC trade facilities from 2027.

So Bangladesh is wanting to sign trade agreements like PTA and FTA, with different countries, he added.
