Viewing Bangladesh elections from across the border

As Bangladesh goes to polls later this year, people of the Indian state of West Bengal are keeping a close watch on the developments in friendly the neighbouring country, with a somewhat sentimentalist approach.

The people of West Bengal sincerely hope there should be peaceful parliamentary elections in Bangladesh, devoid of any scuffling and coercion. Apart from the upcoming election to be peaceful and tranquil, we hope the impact should not be, but calm.

If the elections are held peacefully the impact along the border areas will be positive. Contrarily, if disturbances take place, the areas bordering with West Bengal and also the ones with Tripura will be heavily disturbed.

The civil society as well as rational minded citizens of West Bengal always prefer peaceful elections, praying that communal harmony and fraternities should prevail among people of both Muslim and Hindu religions. They think Bengalis from India, especially West Bengal and Tripura, should have free access to travel to Bangladesh.

A striking feature in front us is that there should cultural and academic interexchange plus corporate personalities and professionals should get easy access to Bangladesh from India.

The people in West Bengal feel terrorism in both nations and also around the subcontinent should always be kept at bay. The actions of prime minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed speak of her courage and dynamism to drive away terrorism from the South Asia. Bengalis from West Bengal and Tripura also love to see complete peace and communal harmony all around India, Bangladesh and also the entire subcontinent.

As relations between India and Bangladesh are pleasant at present, cultural exchanges are smooth, a state that indicates Bengalis of both the nations fall under the same banner and roof.

The arts faculty of Dhaka University recently organised a gala cultural rendezvous at the Teachers Student Centre. This transmitted a noble message - despite the political bifurcation we are all same and there is no discrimination between us on cultural and academic front.

Prominent academicians of Bangladesh are also offered opportunity to study at various academic institutions in India to conduct research.

This is another healthy sign of progress in bilateral relations that has also been reflected in increasing trade and commercial activities. Tata Sons has set up a unit in Sonargaon in the outskirts of Dhaka city.

The garment industry is flourishing in Bangladesh along with the ceramics industry. Indian nationals visit that country to buy those products.

We expect peace and calm in the post-election Bangladesh and also strengthened relations between our two nations in the coming days. We hope success our relations are taken to further heights.
