Who is Amazon's next CEO?

On Tuesday, Amazon's founder Jeff Bezos surprised marketplaces when he announced his intend to side the reins to Andy Jassy, the head of the company's on-demand cloud computing program later in the entire year.

Mr Bezos can be executive chairman of the world's major retailer after nearly 30 years as its leader - a process expected to complete in the 3rd quarter of the year.

Mr Jassy, 52, who joined Amazon in 1997 - the entire year the business went public - played an essential role in launching Amazon Web Offerings (AWS) in 2006.

The cloud computing platform generated $45.37 billion worth of sales last year, almost 12 % of the company's total income of over $386bn, regarding to figures released on Tuesday. It competes with famous brands Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle Cloud and others.

“I took my last final exam at HBS [Harvard Organization School], the initial Friday of May in 1997 and We started Amazon subsequent Monday … no, We didn't know very well what my job was going to come to be, or what my title would end up being,” Mr Jassy said in a HBS podcast found in September.

Initially, he joined Amazon’s eight-member marketing workforce, taking care of competitive intelligence and customer retention. After a couple of months, he was relocated onto another project exploring new product classes.


After working in various departments and even as a shadow to Mr Bezos, Mr Jassy joined a team to create a "vision document" for how companies might operate in the future.

“And that's what converted into AWS … that was back late 2003 ... since then I am managing the AWS business,” he added.

Mr Jassy, who had the opportunity to do the job closely with Mr Bezos during the start of his profession, described him as a unique thinker.

“I have no idea if I've ever seen anybody with the mixture of skills that he has. He's very inventive. He is an unusual mixture of both having good technical competence, but also very strong customer empathy. You do not usually get those two in one person,” Mr Jassy explained.

Mr Jassy in addition has spoken out on numerous social issues, including the death of George Floyd while found in custody of the Minneapolis law enforcement this past year. Mr Jassy is certainly married to designer Elana Rochelle Caplan and may be the father of two children.

Amazon, which employs 1.3 million persons and has a $1.7 trillion marketplace cap, reported its 1st $100bn-plus financial quarter on Tuesday, due to what it called a "record-breaking holiday season". The company acquired $125.56bn of revenue, making a net profit of $7.2bn.

“Andy established fact inside the organization and has been at Amazon almost provided that I've. He will be an outstanding leader, and he has my full confidence,” Mr Bezos explained in a statement announcing his appointment.

“Staying the CEO of Amazon is certainly a deep responsibility, and it’s consuming. Once you have a responsibility like that, it’s hard to place attention on anything else.”

As being executive chairman, Mr Bezos said he will engage in essential Amazon initiatives and concentrate on other programmes including the Time 1 Fund, the Bezos Earth Fund, space airline flight enterprise Blue Origin and The Washington Content.

“This isn’t about retiring. I am very passionate about the impact I believe these organisations can possess,” he said.
