Wisconsin Department of Tourism promotes outdoor recreation heading into fall season

The Wisconsin Department of Tourism continues to promote outdoor recreation getting into the fall season while encouraging both residents and tourists to plan a trip in the state if they feel comfortable.

The Wisconsin Department of Tourism launched its fall 2020 advertising campaign on Sept. 7. It'll run in-state through Oct. 11. The department's marketing and public relations teams remain active promoting the state of Wisconsin on local, regional and national media platforms through its social media channels or third-party travel publications.

"Throughout a time where everybody knows our options are limited, outdoor recreation will probably continue to be the main focus that we place on giving residents of Wisconsin options for healthy and safe activity outside and in wide open spaces and also a few of our close by neighbors who turn to Wisconsin for a few of their finest outdoor getaways," Secretary of Wisconsin Department of Tourism Sara Meaney said.

The outdoor recreation economy contributes $7.8 billion, or 2.4%, of Wisconsin's gross domestic product, the agency said. The sector in addition has increased 12% between 2012 and 2017.

That still remains a wonderful focus for people to think of Wisconsin and discover a reason to step away and make memories with the persons they love," Meaney added.

The department is highlighting a few of the unique business partnerships such as the Wisconsin Apple Growers Association, which is partnering with family orchards in the state to create an apple sampler box that can be shipped directly to someone's house. Agritourism opportunities including pumpkin farms, apple picking and other fruit orchards have became extremely popular attractions, according to Meaney, and these businesses have been creative in strategies from socially distanced fruit picking to curbside pickup of produce.

With colder weather approaching, the Wisconsin Department of Tourism also continues to promote indoor options including museums and cultural organizations which may have found imaginative and safe ways to reopen through the pandemic.

"Whether it’s a skill museum or a brief history museum or other examples like that, I absolutely encourage persons to reach out with their favorite spots and museums, find out if they are opening, find out what their policies are and find ways to support these organizations through the entire fall and winter months. We wish those organizations to remain healthy and open and weather the storm aswell," Meaney said.
