Bangladesh prepares for World Skills Competition 2019
Bangladesh needs 150,000 world-class skilled workforce every year to meet local industry needs as well as to enter the global market
With a view to participating in the World Skills Competition 2019, to be held August 22 to 27 in Kazan,Russia, the Bangladesh government has taken numerous initiatives to develop the skills of the country’s youth and harness their collective talent.
The National Skills Development Council (NSDC) has organised a contest to select talents for branding the country at the global forum as a skilled workforce source, reports UNB.
Bangladesh World Skill Competition provides a platform for youngsters to compete at the national level and prove their mettle.
The RISING STAR competition
It is an exclusive platform for participants between the ages of 18-22 years. The champions selected from this competition, under the guidance of NSDC, are prepared to compete in the following trade categories: s Fashion Technology, IT Software for Business, Web Design, Bakery, Cooking, Patisserie and Confectionery, Restaurant Services, and Information Networking Cabling.
As part of the talent hunt, the NSDC organized a Rising Star Skills Competition in two trades – cooking and restaurant services- at the Underprivileged Children’s Educational Programs (UCEP) in Mirpur , Dhaka, on Saturday.
A total of 75 participants from various training institutes, including TKCI (Tony Khan Culinary Institute & Hotel Management), IHMH (Travel and Tourism; Hotel Management), NHTTI (National Hospitality and Tourism Training Institute), BHMTI (Bangladesh Hospitality Management Training Institute), and RHMTI (Regency Hospitality Management Training Institute) took part in the competition.
NSDC’s chief executive officer (CEO), A.B.M Khorshed Alam, said “The selected candidates will be given world-class training for the next 11 months to enhance their skills in the said trades. Two candidates will be finally selected for participating in World Skills Competition 2019.”
Need for talent hunt
Bangladesh needs 150,000 world-class skilled workforce every year to meet local industry needs as well as to enter the global market. With this view, the NSDC has taken the initiative to participate in the 45th competition in Russia, said Khorshed.
This is the first time the country is going to attend the world skill competition, which would take the country significantly ahead in branding its image across the globe, he said.
Tony Khan, president of the Tony Khan Culinary Institute & Hotel Management(TKCI) said, with their participation in the Rising Star Skills Competition 2018, the confidence level of the students has increased. NSDC’s move in this regard is a milestone achievement for Bangladesh.
“NSDC under its present CEO has arranged a national programme which is a matter of pride,” he added.
A.K.M. Bari, chairman, Industry Skill Council (ISC) on Tourism and Hospitality, Dr Rubina Husain, secretary general of ISC and managing director of the Institute of Hotel Management & Hospitality (IHMM), Tahsinah Ahmed, CEO of UCEP, and NSDC directors Rezaul Karim and Shah Alam, among others, were present at the programme.
