Basis calls for women’s participation to increase in the ICT sector

Comparing to the percentage of female participation in Bangladesh’s RMG sector, speakers at a press briefing have urged Bangladesh’s ICT sector to encourage women to join it.

Speaking at the event on Monday, Syed Almas Kabir, president of the Bangladesh Association for Software and Information Services (Basis) said that women are minimally involved in the country’s ICT sector.

He made the statements while announcing the 20th anniversary of Basis, at a press briefing held on Monday at its office in Karwan Bazar in Dhaka.

“We need to encourage them to get involved with the ICT sector, and for that we need to give them proper training,” added Almas.

Basis Senior Vice-President Farhana A Rahman said the ICT industry will be the future of Bangladesh.

“Women’s participation will surely play a pivotal role in developing this industry,” added Farhana.

“Besides, we have to highlight the story of our successful and renowned citizens working in international tech companies, so that upcoming entrepreneurs will be motivated to join this industry”, she added.

Speakers at the press briefing were also of the opinion that when both national and international community will understand Bangladesh’s capacity in the IT sector, it will help to build faith in the industry.

Basis will host several events in order to commemorate its 20-year completion.

The events will include: a student conference, a product launch for both e-commerce and local software, a networking dinner with international partners and stakeholders, a roundtable on showcasing 20 years of the ICT industry, the launch of privileged services for members, and a 20-year celebration gala dinner.

Former Basis president Habibullah N Karim, and Basis Director and Basis youth fest convener Tamzid Siddiq Spondon were present at the event.
