Cabinet: No quota for any first class government jobs

Air death passenger’s family to get Tk 1.18 crore in compensation  

There will be no quota system in direct appointments to  non cadre eighth and upper grade (1st class ) government jobs.

The decision was taken at the weekly cabinet meeting, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, at the premier's office on Monday.

Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam briefed reporters after the meeting.

The cabinet approved the proposal placed by the Ministry of Public Administration to clarify the related circular which was issued earlier on October 4, 2018. 

The circular stated that no quota would be applicable for posts up to ninth grade (first and second class) as the quota system was abolished. But it had no clarification as to whether the quota system would be applicable to direct appointments to posts for non cadre 8th grade or above.

Before the circular, the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC)  recruited employees of the first and second class posts and posts for 8th grade or above directly.

The meeting , held on Monday, decided to pay compensation to the families of people dying in air disasters. 

The cabinet approved a draft law to raise compensation for loss of passengers, baggage and goods during air travel.

The cabinet secretary said: “The meeting approved the draft law Air Transportation (Montreal Convention) Act 2020, which calls for an increase in compensation for passengers in case of death or injury from accidents and loss of baggage during air travel.”

According to the draft law, almost  Tk 1.18 crore will be the new compensation money for a passenger in case of death during air travel. This compensation will be given to the legal successor of the passenger according to the law. 

Apart from that, the meeting also approved in principle the draft of Bangladesh Travel Agency (Enlistment and Control) (amendment) Act 2020.

According to the new draft, now travel agency owners can hand over ownership of agencies to others and they will also be able to open travel agency branches across the country. Besides, the Enlistment and Control authority can impose a fine of up to Tk 5 lakh if the agencies fail to renew their licenses in time. Under the previous law, there was no provision for a fine. It was rather the government which shut down agencies. 

The cabinet also approved the draft of Iodized Salt Act 2020. Through this act several necessary measures will be taken to improve the salt sector. 

The cabinet further approved the Chittagong Port Authority Act 2019. The approved draft envisages that the act would make Chittagong Port Authority more powerful than ever. 

The cabinet also approved April 6 as National Sports Day, in line with the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.
