Dairy farm companies have urged the federal government to increase customs tariffs about bulk imports of powdered milk to safeguard the expanding sector, reported the Bangladesh Dairy Farmers' Association (BDFA).

This plea comes immediately after the federal government announced its revenue collection plan for another fiscal year, beginning on July 1, last Thursday.

"Importing milk powder found in bulk is in charge of hurting the neighborhood dairy sector therefore, it is very a subject of regret that bigger import duties have not been levied on this type product," stated Mohammad Shah Emran, secretary general of the Bangladesh Dairy Farmers' Association (BDFA), throughout a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity yesterday.

The volume of milk powder imported annually has truly gone up yearly since fiscal 2016-17 to meet up the country's supply deficit despite the upsurge in local production.

Bangladesh imported 150 lakh tonnes of milk powder for Tk 2,800 crore in fiscal 2018-19, the same time that 99 lakh tonnes of the dried dairy merchandise were produced locally, according to info from the Bangladesh Bureau of Figures (BBS) and Department of Livestock.

During the first nine a few months of the existing fiscal 12 months, dried milk imports declined 5 % year-on-yr to 106 lakh tonnes. Imported milk powder comes or used by different businesses such as for example hotels, bakeries and eating places who are able to pay increased rates or simply resource it locally, the BDFA stated while demanding a 100 per cent hike on import tasks for the product.

The BDFA also asked the federal government to create livestock feed exempt from import tariffs to create more competition in the fodder industry.

The association demanded that dairy farming be treated as part of the agriculture sector in order that companies pays reduced electricity and water bills instead of being charged commercial rates.

The BDFA also wants the government to supply a 20-year-longer tax benefit for investments in the dairy sector and support from the general public sector to establish powdered milk manufacturing plants in the united states.
