‘Fashion can make socio-economical progress’

Bangladesh Youth Symposium was hosted by the Youth School for Social Entrepreneurs (YSSE) in association with the Independent Human Resource Society (IHRS). The event was organized to engage the youth of various institutions in social entrepreneurship and self-employment. The club partners for the event was the IUB Debating Club and the Independent Marketer’s Association

The famous fashion designer and former international model Bibi Russell was the special guest at the Bangladesh Youth Symposium, an event that was held at the Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) on Thursday. 

Speaking to the audience, Bibi Russell said: “Education starts right from the bottom; it is like the roots of trees that eventually become the society. My family allowed me to go in fashion even at that time. Present and future is surely important but past develops you. Recognition, gives you strength to go forward but I never tell people that I'm successful for it drowns you, I believe.”

Bibi also mentioned her own thoughts about the industry she belongs to. She said, “Fashion for me is a culture and also society. Bangladesh has a lot of heritage of fashion elements, such as muslin which fits easily inside the match box. 

 “Don't ever get disappointed but remain focused. I work in many different countries, but I always try to sell products of my own country. Sometimes, they take it away and replace it with their own products. It is ok to get upset, but I will continue to do this for the people of Bangladesh. 

Bibi concluded by saying, “My work is absolutely linked with development and sustainable economic development. Fashion can make social economical development. I don't get tired; I never took a sleeping tablet. I sleep the next day only to wake up to what I've created.”

Bibi told the Dhaka Tribune Showtime, “I try to avail almost every opportunity to motivate the young generation, as they will be the country’s future.”

In response to how positive she is about the current generation, when it comes to making a difference, Bibi replied, “I do not have the phrase ‘can’t do’ in my vocabulary. Therefore, I am very positive about this generation.”

She was also asked the current state of Bangladesh’s fashion industry and her response was, “I think there are not enough fashion colleges in our country. There aren’t institutions to teach the most trending fashions. Just as you have grammar for writing, fashion also has grammar. That grammar needs to be imparted for proper fashion.

One of the event organizers Nishat Salsabil told Showtime, “After this Symposium, we plan to take the IHRS members to visit a few businesses of various industries, to give them more practical knowledge.  Our vision is to organize an international event from IHRS, to encourage more exchange of knowledge and information in regards to the field of Human Resource, between Bangladeshi youth and international students.”
