What you sell defines your business, and dropshipping is no exception. One of the most essential steps when starting a dropshipping business is definitely product research. With proper product research, you have a better chance of finding your winning product. Without conducting product research, you could be putting your business in a risky situation.
E-commerce can be a resilient business model, but it’s also fragile, especially when it comes to dropshipping. I am the founder of a dropshipping platform, and my time in the space has shown me that just one bad review can do serious damage to your store. Thus, in this article, I’ve outlined five tips for choosing a winning dropshipping product.
1. Consider avoiding products that are too large or too fragile. During the product selection process, try to keep those huge and heavy items at arm’s length, such as furniture or large fitness equipment, household appliances, amusement facilities, etc. In my experience, much of the time, the biggest cost in dropshipping is not necessarily the product itself but the shipping fee. Big and heavy products come with big and heavy shipping fees, which can cut down on profit margins.
In addition to size, a product’s fragility is also important to consider. Items often must be shipped and transported long distances, with multiple stops along the way, in order to deliver the product to the customer. If a product is too fragile, the goods can get damaged during the transaction, customers could initiate a refund and the express company might not be willing to assume the responsibility of damaging the parcel. All of this, in turn, can lead to unnecessary and troublesome disputes. So, when it comes to choosing a product, I recommend staying away from fragile things like glassware and ceramic goods.
