Galaxy S10 Cancellation Exposes Samsung's Nasty Surprise

Samsung’s 10th-anniversary Galaxy S10 will be its most exciting upgrade in years. Not only does it promise a radical new design, but a flagship model with six cameras which openly taunts the iPhone X. That said, these changes come with some controversial compromises and another one has just been exposed…

Following new leaks from historically accurate Korean site The Bell about the Galaxy S10’s camera systems, research from BGR has shown it is almost certain Samsung has been forced to scrap facial recognition on all four models. And this is a blow as Samsung was understood to be on the verge of a dramatic breakthrough.

What The Bell explains is Samsung’s three Galaxy S10 models (a 5.8-inch S10, 6.2-inch S10+, new budget model) will have just one front camera while the fourth model, a massive 6.7-inch flagship codenamed the ‘Beyond X’, will have dual front-facing cameras.

The problem with this, as BGR notes, is the range’s controversial new ‘cutout’ display leaves no space for the infrared sensor used in current displays for facial recognition, let alone the three additional sensors (flood illuminator, dot projector and infrared camera) used by Apple for its class-leading Face ID system. And it is this, which Samsung was understood to be close to perfecting.

BGR points out that Apple will shrink the notch in its 2019 iPhones by combining the FaceTime and infrared cameras, but even if Samsung has this technology the cutout wouldn’t have space for the two remaining sensors. Furthermore, this news backs up a report earlier this month.
