Govt working for reputation of skills certification: officials

The government is working to sign mutual recognition agreements (MRA) with numerous countries and regional bodies so Bangladeshi migrant workers' skills certifications are accepted internationally, two officials said yesterday. 

Such agreements are required to ensure robust accessibility of Bangladeshi personnel on the global market, they said at an appointment in a hotel in the capital.

Bangladeshi migrant workers in the centre East earn lower wages than Sri Lankan or perhaps Indians, due to lack of proper certification, said Bangladesh Employers Federation.

Addressing yesterday's programme, Mir Khairul Alam, extra director basic (training) of Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Teaching (BMET), said the government recently took a decision to supply skills training for migrant workers, good National Complex and Vocational Qualifications Framework.

However, providing training will never be enough, since now there is an problem of whether workers' certification is recognized in the global industry, he said.

To solve this, authorities are under procedure for signing MRAs with several countries, he said, adding that already most agreements have already been signed.

Addressing the event as chief guest, Mujibul Haque Chunnu, chairperson of Parliamentary Standing Committee on labour and occupation ministry, urged every stakeholders, including government officials and NGOs, to come to be sincere to get rid of migrant workers' sufferings.
