'Greedy people are controlling banks'

Bangladesh's banking sector has gone into the clutches of some greedy people. Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed, former President of Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) made this comment on Monday in New York while speaking at a view exchange meeting with journalists.

Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed attended a program in New York in the United States of America marking the 8th anniversary of Standard Express which is a subsidiary organization of Standard Bank in the USA.

He said, "A bunch of greedy and gluttonous people have gripped the financial sector of Bangladesh. These people have plundered billions of taka from different banks. The country's entire banking sector is on the brink of devastation because of these people."

The government has been trying to prosecute these crooks, Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed further said. Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed, who is the present Chairman of Standard Bank, said that, "Expatriate Indians working in Bangladesh have been taking away around 6 billion dollars every year. The authorities concerned are in charge of monitoring whether this money is being transferred to India in legal or illegal ways.

However, I have proposed several times that Bangladesh should train up its own human resources so that workers from other countries do not need to be recruited. It would save 6 billion dollars from being transferred to foreign countries."

Bangladesh is now being considered as a development role model by many countries, Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed remarked. He added that poverty in North Bengal has been much eliminated following the construction of Jamuna Bridge. The accomplishment of Padma Bridge will add 1.5% to the country's economic growth every year, he said.
