Handloom fest begins in the capital

The festival is jointly organized by Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Foundation and Association of Fashion Designers of Bangladesh (AFDB)
 
“Heritage Handloom Festival-2018”, a small and medium enterprise (SME) three-day-long (October 4 to 6) fair started at Khazana Gardenia in Gulshan-2, Dhaka on Thursday.

The festival is jointly organized by Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Foundation and Association of Fashion Designers of Bangladesh (AFDB). 

Finance Minister ABA Muhith speaking at the inauguration said: “We must put in our effort to keep the handloom industry alive as a cultural heritage in acknowledging our roots.”

Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor was also present at the program.

About 40 entrepreneurs and designers in 35 stalls are participating in the fair.

SME Foundation Manager Rahul Barua said: “Through the fair, there is an opportunity to form a network among weavers and buyers. Besides, we arrange this fair so that our tradition/heritage does not go extinct.”

Renuka Chakma, owner of Memory Boutiques said: “This fair represents our tradition to foreigners. As we can meet our customer directly through the fair we can make more profit than before. No middle man works here. So I wish these kinds of fairs are organized more often.”

A representative from Indian High Commission, Soniya Tomar, visiting the fair said: “I came here because I can buy some products of my choice. I like handloom and Tangail saree. I was introduced to some traditional dresses and heritage of Bangladesh.”

The fair starts from 10am and ends at 10pm from Thursday to Saturday.

Dhakai jamdani, Monipuri saree, Mirpur Benarasi saree, Tangail saree, nokshi katha, and Pinon khadi of Rangamati and Bandarban, Taat bostro, Sirajgonj taat, etc are available at reasonable prices.
