Industry sector contributes 33.71% of national income, says Amu

The industry sector now contributes to 33.71% of the national income of Bangladesh, up from 17.77% ten years prior.

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu made the statement on Thursday while speaking at a press briefing highlighting the success of the Ministry of Industries in the last five years, organized by the Ministry of Industry (MOI), at its auditorium.

“We have noticed a growth in the country’s economy following good performance of factories. The per capita income of Bangladesh has gone up to $1,751,” Amu added.

Amu further said: “The country’s export income went up to $36.67 billion in the fiscal year 2017-18, from $14.11 billion in FY 2007-08. Additionally, the ministry has implemented various policies to achieve sustainable and skill-based industrialization.”  Speaking about the leather industry, he said that this industry will surpass the ready-made garments (RMG) industry in terms of contribution to the national income. 

“Tannery transfer from Hazaribagh to Savar was one of our greatest achievements. 100,000 people will be employed in this environment-friendly new industrial estate in Savar,” said Amu. 

Speaking at the briefing, the minister further said that currently, there are about 1,250 small industries, and more than 2.5 million cottage industries in the country, generating employment for about 3.1 million people. 

Approximately 10% of the plot in the BSCIC (Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industry Corporation) industrial area has been allocated for the skills development of women entrepreneurs. Funding with single digit interest rate has been arranged for SME entrepreneurs, he added.
