Wouldn’t it be nice if your window had an adjustable mesh that could expand to allow more light and air when it's needed, and contract when you don’t?

At the ongoing Bengaluru Nano India show, among the more immediately useful technologies showcased is one produced by the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS).

The Bengaluru-based tech centre is rolling out a smart window made of aluminium interspersed with glass that can regulate the light and air getting into your apartment or office, thereby allowing you to arrive or down the light and air-conditioning as is comfortable to you.

In particular, the answer is tailor-made for the construction industry to build buildings that do not trap heat and therefore need less energy. This technology can be used in the auto industry.

It’s a known fact that glass facades increase the temperature in the building, because of which people use air-conditioning and fans. In the nanotech smart window, the capability to transparency of the window varies between 0 and 90 per cent, according to your requirement. In summer, only 10 per cent of light is permitted to enter, thereby minimizing the heating up of an area. Conversely, in winter, maximum heat or light can be allowed in, keeping the interiors warmer. This reduces or minimizes use of ac units or room heaters.
