Net positive foreign investment at DSE in September

According to the DSE, foreign investors sold shares worth Tk181.76 crore against purchases of Tk176.01 crore in August, amounting to a negative net investment of Tk5.75 crore in the month

After five consecutive months of net negative foreign investment, the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) returned to positive territory in September.

Foreign investors bought shares worth Tk247.50 crore in the month, against sales of Tk212.34 crore. This amounts to net foreign investment of Tk35.16 crore.

The reason for the increase in investment was because foreign investors had a tendency to invest in the capital market when share prices were on the decline, stock brokers said.

Regarding the reason for net negative foreign investment in the previous five months, Dhaka Stock Exchange Brokers Association (DBA) President, Mostaq Ahmed Sadeque, said the depreciation of the taka against the US dollar had dampened the mood of foreign investors.

Furthermore, political uncertainty ahead of the upcoming national election had also made investors adopt a “wait and see approach,” he added.

“They always invest in the capital market when share prices are on the decline, ” the DBA president said.

According to the DSE, foreign investors sold shares worth Tk181.76 crore against purchases of Tk176.01 crore in August, amounting to a negative net investment of Tk5.75 crore in the month.

Earlier in July, foreign investors sold shares worth Tk444.74 crore against purchases of Tk412.04 crore, amounting to a negative net investment of Tk32.7 crore.

Net foreign investment was also negative in April, May, and June.

In April, net foreign investment amounted to negative Tk29.69 crore, while the figure was negative Tk282.32 crore in May, and negative 206.68 crore in June.
