A women's only hotel has opened on the Spanish island of Mallorca, a first for the European country.

The Som Dona Hotel has a no men, no children policy, welcoming only women over the age of 14 to stay.

Located near the Mallorcan town of Porto Cristo, on the east of the Balearic island, the hotel promises "comfort, relaxation, art, healthy living, and Mediterranean flavour."

The four-star hotel has an abundance of facilities, with a pool, spa, library and roof-top terrace, and boasts 39 rooms.

It bills itself as "a new space for women who are looking to disconnect from the stress of daily life that offers personalised care tailored to their needs."

A well positioned property, the hotel is within a few minutes walking distance from the Caves of Drach, Torrent de Llebrona and Torre Serral dels Falcons.

The picturesque Cala Murta, Playa de Porto Cristo and Church Mare de Deu del Carme are all also less than a 20 minute walk away.

The hotel also offers “flexitarian gastronomy”, with wellness menus, healthy cuisine and a range of sustainably sourced zero-kilometre produce.

The hotel does employ men, in keeping with Spanish gender discrimination laws, but according to Joan Enric Capella, Som Hotel's president, one of the hotel's objectives is to "give a certain visibility to women doing traditionally masculine jobs".

Rooms offer two single beds or one double bed, with the option of a pool view.

The hotel has reported catering predominantly to solo female travellers.

Hostel World recently published a survey of Gen Z's holiday habits, reporting that 75 per cent of young female travellers "plan to go or have gone on a holiday by themselves", compared to 67 per cent of their male counterparts.

Travel site HalalBooking.com reports that there is no "halal food provision in the property or nearby places", however, there is an outdoor pool with "100 per cent privacy" for women.
