Regional furniture manufacturer sees price increase with lumber

If you're thinking about buying new furniture, you will probably see a price increase.

There is not a shortage of wood. It’s all the other elements that are traveling up the cost.

“I’ve experienced furniture for more than years 30 and I have hardly ever seen anything like this. Ever before,” Jo Anne Arrant said.

Jo Anne Arrant features spent her life in the furniture organization. As the customer program rep for J Furniture, Arrant has to make clear to vendors why their rates are up.

They’re not alone. J Furniture is merely among the many furniture makers working with the lumber cost rise.

Before costs went up, a sofa could cost a manufacturer $30 to $40 to make. It now costs 30% more.

Operations Manager John McCarther says that the increase must go somewhere.

“It’s an excellent concern for the makers here because you understand so much of our cost goes into the wood that now, you know, when you’re witnessing a 30% upsurge in just one the main sofa, consider what that will to the finish product, just how much it expense for the finish product,” McCarther said.

And that’s not the only task.

“Especially to be 18 to 20 weeks out, you know, in the event that you place an order today. Normally, our rapid ship program was 2 weeks, today it’s 14 weeks,” Arrant said.

Fewer staff mean less lumber has been produced and shipped. And that drives up the price of making furniture. And until the consumers say enough will do, that trend will also continue.

“My wood suppliers are arriving at me each month going, hey the price is again. It’s going back up, it’s going back up. Hence, I’m needing to constantly analysis my prices and so, that takes me to my store on a month basis saying, hey the purchase price is heading to rise next month, price will rise the month after. Thus, when you start going back to your vendors, increasing rates three and four situations in a season, it’s hard to allow them to set a price on what they’re likely to sell off their sofa for,” McCarther said.

When staff are back face to face, lumber prices are anticipated to fall as creation increases.
