In any industry, there is jobs cut and at the same time job creation due to adoption of technology

Bangladesh needs skilled manpower for digitization of the entire value chain of apparel industry and averting unemployment due to adoption of technology in the production process, German experts have said.

They came up with the remarks while addressing a press conference on the Techtextil and Texprocess 2019, two expositions on textile and apparel industry, at Frankfurt in Germany on Sunday.

Messe Frankfurt, the world’s largest trade fair and event organizer, is going to organize the four-day mega expositions beginning today at Frankfurt.

A good number of Bangladeshi apparel makers will join the expositions to learn about the latest technology to used in the sector.

"In any industry, there is jobs cut and at the same time job creation due to adoption of technology. Technology is flexible, which grantees sustainability in the production process," said Elgar Straub, managing director of VDMA Textile Care, Fabric and Leather Technologies.

Automation was not always bad, if there were quality people, said Elgar.

In adoption of technology or automation, there would be loss of jobs but there would more better jobs, said the expert.

In averting the impact of unemployment and for digitization of the entire value chain of the apparel industry, Bangladesh would need quality people with skill, which provide better jobs opportunity, said Elgar.

"Education is very crucial to this end," he stressed.

Meanwhile, the move for the technical textiles will strengthen the country's economy.

“Throughout Europe, technical textiles are one of the biggest sectors of the textile and apparel industry and thus a decisive driving force for its economic strength. Held concurrently, Texprocess and its highly innovative exhibitors stand for high-tech in the textile-processing sector, in an unrivalled, concentrated way," said Detlef Braun, member of the executive board of Messe Frankfurt.

Technical textiles account for 27% of global textile production. By 2020, the market is expected to grow to $175billion. With annual sales worth 13 billion euros, Germany is the global market leader for technical textiles.

Texprocess will exhibit the complete range of textile-garment machineries available including design, layout, cutting, making, trimming, digital textile printing, conditioning, finishing, textile logistics, and textile recycling machines

Techtextil covers “technical textile” which includes geotextiles, medical textiles, safety and security wear, protective garments, and sports clothing.

The leading international trade fairs for technical textiles and nonwovens and for the processing of textile and flexible materials will bring together a total of 1,818 exhibitors from 59 countries: 1,501 from 57 countries at Techtextil and 317 from 34 countries at Texprocess.

As per the data of the organizer, it is estimated that technical textiles account for around 30% of worldwide textile production and the world market is expected to grow by over four percent a year to reach US $198 billion by 2022.

In Europe, technical textiles represent around 17 percent of total textile production and are thus one of the most important foundations of the European textile industry.

Germany is the world market leader in the field of technical textiles, which accounts for 60 percent of the turnover of the German textile and apparel industry.
