SME Steel Named California Specialty Contractor of the Year

ENR’s editors have selected SME Steel as the 2018 California Specialty Contractor of the Year.

Founded in 1992, the firm is helping provide the bones of some of the state’s most iconic projects and has more than doubled its revenue in the past year. SME has been recognized for its safety record for its work on Levi Stadium. The firm began fabrication on this project in June and steel erection in July, keeping four cranes erecting continuously and finishing steel erection ahead of schedule.

SME’s other prominent California projects include San Francisco’s Moscone Center expansion, NVIDIA’s new headquarters and the FivePoint Gateway campus in Irvine. The firm’s largest regional project completed in 2017 was Google’s restored Spruce Goose hangar in Venice, and the largest California project to break ground is LA Stadium at Hollywood Park. The steel topping out for the stadium was in June 2018.

Aside from its impressive revenue growth, the company also contributes to its communities. SME has been active with the Boy Scouts, helping to develop the organization’s first welding merit badge. The firm also aided in funding a baseball park for disabled children and worked with Habitat for Humanity.

SME will be honored at ENR California’s Oct. 11 Best Projects event in Los Angeles and featured in the December issue of ENR California. The December issue will also feature the entire list of the top-ranked specialty contractors based on 2017 revenue.
