Volkswagen is found in talks with rival carmakers about developing an operating-system for the car of the future, Christian Senger, its panel member accountable for digital services and computer software, said.

With the advent of autonomous driving, carmakers have been forced to link up radar, camera and ultrasonic sensors and connect them to braking and steering components, something requires thousands of lines of software code.

"There exists a race to create automotive os's. We are seeing that many non-automotive players happen to be building up competence in this location," said Mr Senger.

Volkswagen table member Thomas Ulbrich said on March that US electrical car manufacturer Tesla includes a ten-year start rivals in terms of building electrical cars and software.

"In future there is going to be fewer automotive os's than carmakers," Mr Senger added.

"The operating system is not a thing that we will control on our own. We will define its core and quickly include open-source ingredients, to create standards. This will create prospects for partnerships," he stated.

Adopting an open-source model with external partners is usually a fresh approach, Mr Senger explained. "This is almost unimaginable for classic carmakers. But this is actually the key breakthrough opportunity."

In January, Volkswagen launched Car.Software, an independent unit responsible for growing lines of code, with around 3,000 digital authorities and a budget of more than $7.8 billion (Dh28.6bn). By 2025, it really wants to have significantly more than 10,000 software authorities.

Mr Senger said it has received various inquiries from other carmakers about if they can take part in the job, adding that the business was found in talks with "many companies".

"We are in the process of seeking at the chances," Mr Senger explained, adding that Volkswagen really wants to create a new system, instead of integrate legacy computer software from rivals.

"This will filter out many who are not willing to do that," he said about potential partners.
