Wildlife Trade: 2 traffickers held with deer hides

Law enforcement detained two alleged traffickers along with 19 deer hides found in Bagerhat's Sharankhola yesterday, 3 days after a tiger's skin was first recovered from the possession of a poacher in the upazila.

A group of Detective Branch of law enforcement recovered the hides from the rented house of 1 Monirul Islam Sheikh, 48, in Rayenda bus stand area around 1.45am, Pankaj Chandra Roy, superintendent of law enforcement found in the district, said in a press briefing at his office.

He said the recovery was made acting on a good tip-off that Monir of Bhadrapara village found in Bagerhat Sadar upazila, along with Mohammad Elius Hawlader, 35, of Rajoir village in Sharankhola upazila, was selling deer skin at the house.

Killing such wild animals and selling their areas of the body are against the law and punishable crimes under the wildlife conservation act.

The hides were found at the bottom floor of Monirul's property, the SP said, adding that Monirul and Elius were arrested from there.

He likewise said preparations were underway to file a case against the duo beneath the act.

After the filing of the case, the arrestees and the hides will be generated before a court for the passage of necessary order, he added.

On January 20, a team of Rab and forest guards arrested an alleged poacher named Gaus Fakir, 45, and recovered your skin of a tiger from his possession in Southkhali area of Sharankhola upazila, which is positioned near the Sundarbans.
