Will 5G be a saviour for struggling smartphones?
Under the mild February sun, not far from the sands of the Platja de la Barceloneta, 100,000 mobile industry executives, fans and journalists are descending on Catalonia’s capital for the sector’s biggest annual event: the Mobile World Congress.
This year’s conference, which begins on Monday, comes at a crucial moment for an industry that appears to be stagnating. Yet optimism is not in short supply, and new revolutions such as 5G and advanced folding smartphones are becoming a reality.
“This year things are really beginning to change,” says Andrew Parker, a director at telecoms trade body GSMA, “the devices and services are beginning to come together.”
