Facebook to check letting advertisers avoid topics

Facebook says it really is working on ways to let advertisers avoid having advertising messages come in feeds alongside content they'd rather not be associated with.

A small band of advertisers will in the near future start testing latest "topic exclusion controls" being honed by the top rated social networking, according to a post.

"These controls will address concerns advertisers have of their ads appearing in Media Feed next to certain topics predicated on their brand suitability preferences," Facebook stated.

The internet giant gave the example of a children's toy company being given the option of not having its advertising appear along with content that falls right into a "crime and tragedy" category.

The move includes the massive social network facing pressure from advertisers wanting to avoid toxic content and abusive content on the platform.

"This product development in addition to testing and learning on News Feed will need much of the entire year," Facebook said. "These are new settings, and it's crucial we build them with safeguards to safeguard people’s personal privacy as we continue steadily to move forward."

Facebook makes most of its money from advertising and features been grappling with curbing the pass on of hate and misinformation in the social network.
