Kuo: 2023 iPhones to Feature 'Periscopic' Telephoto Lens

Kuo didn't elaborate, but we've heard countless prior rumors about Apple's work on a good periscope lens, which would allow for significant improvements in optical zoom capacities. Kuo previously explained that he predicted Apple to look at a periscope lens in 2022 iPhone models, nonetheless it appears he today believes that will not happen until 2023.

Existing smartphones have previously followed periscope lens technology. Huawei's P30 Pro permits 5x optical zoom, and an ‌iPhone‌ with a periscope lens could have comparable features. Current iPhones max out at 2.5x optical zoom and 12x digital zoom, but better zoom capacities could now let Apple's iPhones contend with smartphones that possess focused on zoom functionality. Samsung's latest smartphones, for example, contain a 100x zoom characteristic that Apple 's current iPhones can't match.

In addition to the prediction about periscopic lens technology to arrive 2023, Kuo shared information on both 2021 and 2022 iPhones.

For the 2021 iPhones, Kuo believes that Apple will adopt a fresh Face ID transmitter that's created from a plastic materials rather than glass, which is currently possible because of improved coating technologies. It's not clear if this could have end-user rewards for ‌iPhone‌ owners or if it'll simply mean a reduction in production cost for Apple.

In the past, it was widely believed that the reason why the Tx lens had to look at glass material was in order to avoid distortion as a result of heat made by VCSEL operation. Our latest study indicates that the Face ID TX lens for the brand new 2H21 ‌iPhone‌ will be produced of plastic rather than glass, because of improved coating technologies and that the Tx plastic lens suppliers will be Largan and Genius, with Largan staying the primary beneficiary of this material change due to its higher supply share.

High-end iPhones releasing on 2021 may also feature an upgraded telephoto zoom lens, with Apple upgrading from a 5-element zoom lens to a 6-element zoom lens, which Kuo says is made possible through "design and production advantages."
