TIB praises Beximco for ‘undeniable’ contributions to Bangladesh economy

Transparency International, Bangladesh or TIB has praised Beximco Group in response to the conglomerate’s protest against remarks on its Vice-Chairman Salman F Rahman and loan rescheduling.

TIB believes that as a leading organisation in the private sector, Beximco’s contributions to the economy are “undeniable”, Sultana Kamal, chairperson of the citizens’ group, has said in a letter to Beximco Chairman Sohail F Rahman.

The company played an active and multilateral role in the domestic and international markets, which is a well-known fact, according to the letter dated Sept 16.

Moreover, Beximco’s business model and practice will be imitable for other small and large private sector organisations in terms of establishing integrity in the sector, Sultana Kamal added.

The letter referred to TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman’s comment in response to a report published by The Daily Star on Sept 13. The newspaper reported that the conglomerate has been afforded another opportunity to reschedule loans.

Iftekharuzzaman was quoted as saying that “taking unfair advantage of the loan rescheduling facility, a group of plunderers are becoming lawmakers”.

The TIB’s statement pointing at Salman Rahman, who also represents Dhaka-1 constituency in parliament, was “slanderous”, Sohail said in his letter.

Sultana Kamal wrote back to Sohail Rahman that the objective of the TIB was “not to make negative remarks” about Beximco or Salman F Rahman.

TIB expressed concerns over the “lacklustre role” of the Bangladesh Bank at a time when the banking sector was on the verge of a crisis, she explained.

As an institution committed to public service, Bangladesh Bank failed to play its role as a regulator, she added.

“TIB believes that criticising this and demanding effective measures fell within the moral duties of the institution.”

TIB’s letter also stated that its objective was “not to make any insinuation at anybody”.
