Utilities at Savar tanneries urged

Tannery owners has demanded power and gas connections to the leather industry village at Saver, the outskirts of capital Dhaka  as they can start production at new Tannery Park after utilities connection cutting at Hazaribagh.    They said new leather Industry Park at Horin-dhara village of Savar yet to complete as Bang-ladesh Small and Cottage Indu-stries Corporation (BSCIC) still could not provide utility service including gas, power and water to the leather industry village.  The tannery industry leaders were speaking at a rally title 'tannery owners-workers rally' at Hazaribagh in the city. 

Under the banner of Leather Industry Protect Unity Council the Tannery Workers Union, Leather Chemicals Business Som-ity, Bangladesh Leather and Leather Goods Manufacturing Co-operative Society Limited, Leather Engineering and Technology Society of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Chemicals Importers and Merchants Association, Bangladesh Leather Expo-rters Association, Bang-ladesh Hide and Skin Merchants Association joined the rally. According to Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA), Depar-tment of Environment (DoE) has recently disconnected power line from more than 224 leather factories, gas connection from 54 and water line disconnected from 193 industries.  Shaheen Ahmed, chairman of BTA said after disconnected utility service of tannery industry at Hazaribagh their production is totally halted. 

He said most of the industry owners has setup all of equipment at tannery Industry Park but could not going to production due to shortage of power and gas connection at Savar. He also said a number of industry owners have not got allocation of plots at the new tannery  industry park. Government should give plots all of the tannery owners.

With DoE teams Law-enforce agencies and Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd, Dhaka Power Distribution Company Ltd (DPDC) and Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority (Dhaka WASA) on Saturday jointly conducted drive to shutdown the utility services including gas line, power and water connection of the tanneries industry at Hazaribagh.
